The Ghosts Of Scampton
A “then and now” image of remembrance based on RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire.
Today the base at Scampton hosts the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team - The world famous Red Arrows and are seen taxiing out for a practice display while above the ghosts of the past return home.
During WWII, Avro Lancaster bombers were based here and famously the 617 “Dambusters” squadron. On the night of 16/17th May 1943, 19 Lancaster’s left in three waves for Germany to attack the great dams as part of “Operation Chastise” using the famous bouncing bomb designed by Barnes Wallace. Of the 19 aircraft that departed, only 11 returned. This composite image depicts 3 of the missing aircraft returning in spirit.
The traditional poppy fields synonymous with remembrance also depicted, My tribute to those lost not just during the Dambusters raids but all who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country whilst serving with the Royal Air Force. Lest we forget…
