Tropical World

Postman Butterfly

A school training day for my daughter and she asked to go to Tropical World, a fairly local butterfly house. Here is a selection of images from the day!

Great Mormon

Whilst subject matter is not so much of a challenge in this scenario - as they are captive bred animals, the main challenge i faced was the climate! I arrived 10 minutes before the place opened and that meant standing outside in the cold with my camera. Not an issue in itself but when you take said camera from a cold outside to a tropical humidity inside, guess what happens! Fog!

Owl Butterfly

Blue Morpho

I spent around half an hour simply walking around and watching the butterflies, trying to identify which was which species and just enjoying seeing them. All while giving my camera and lens time to acclimatise to the temperature and humidity. Once my glass was clear photography could begin!

Lime Butterfly

Red-crested Turaco

I very much enjoyed trying to capture the Butterflies, obviously not the usual type to be seen in the UK and short of going to places like the Amazon, unlikely to ever have chance to photograph! So they may not be true “wildlife” but it does mean that anyone can go along and see and photograph these animals. It is certainly good for anyone wanting to practice small wildlife photography.

Emerald Tree Monitor

Meerkat

Orange Ground Thrush

Tropical world also has a couple of other sections with tropical climate species such as a rainforest room which contains some funky looking birds! After seeing the information signs we challenged ourselves to find the different species which was actually very difficult!

Victoria Crowned Pigeon

Crested Partridge

Other areas included an arid, dessert theme as well as tropical wetland, river, forest canopy and a nocturnal area. The place itself is not a big place but does house a nice collection of flora and fauna. They also have tanks of smaller animals such as insects, fish, tree frogs, snakes and lizards.

Nicobar Pigeon

Cotton Top Tamarin

While i do still prefer to go out into nature looking for wildlife, this was a nice visit and well worth the trip. I would recommend anyone interested in animals or photography to give it a go, its a good way to come home with guaranteed images and that can only lead to improving your own photography! A good way to play with your settings and compositions…
